Aider is an open-source AI pair programming tool that works in the terminal with any LLM. Features new edit formats (patch, editor-diff, editor-whole, editor-diff-fenced) and a reasoning_effort setting for GPT-5. Does not support MCP. It supports YAML-based configuration for settings and model preferences, a conventions file for coding standards, and gitignore-style patterns to exclude files. Config files are loaded from home directory, git repo root, and current directory in that order, with later files taking priority.
